Continuing environmental degradation is a worldwide problem threatening the quality of life and its viability. The problem can only be understood and addressed by drawing upon the resources of multidisciplinary approaches. What is Environmental Issues & Mgmt at ODU like?

What makes Environmental Issues & Mgmt at ODU unique?

  • This minor prepares students for positions in environmental protection, environmental science, and government agencies. The variety of courses allows for the addition of topic areas into non-traditional environmental health fields.

  • Students can tailor their minor courses to their interests with over two dozen courses to choose from. Opportunities include adding environmental health, engineering or geography courses to target specific career fields, such as environmental law.

  • Gain hands-on experience in environmental and public health policy and ethics, and pollution prevention efforts.

This interdisciplinary minor has benefited graduates, qualifying them for positions with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control, and various government agencies, as well as general industry.  Several of our graduates with this minor have gone on to work for the state Department of Environmental Quality and NASA.

What are some courses offered in Environmental Issues & Mgmt at ODU?

CEE 350:
Environmental Pollution and Control


Introduction to the fundamental principles of environmental engineering. Topics in water quality, water and wastewater treatment, air quality, and solid waste and landfills are discussed. Prerequisites: CHEM 121N-CHEM 122N, MATH 211, PHYS 231N.

ENVH 422:
Water and Wastewater Technology


Introduction to water quality management and wastewater treatment technology. Topics include the effect of organic, inorganic and thermal pollutants in water quality streams, waterborne diseases, monitoring concepts, methods of water quality management, regulatory considerations, theory and application of wastewater treatment concepts, wastewater characterization, and treatment methods and disposal methods. Prerequisite: BIOL 103 or permission of instructor.

PHIL 344E:
Environmental Ethics


An examination of the nature and basis of human obligations for the welfare of the environment with special attention to the foundations of ethical decision making. Prerequisites: ENGL 110C.

What are the requirements to apply for Environmental Issues & Mgmt at ODU?

Students entering the Minor program in Environmental Issues & Mgmt should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)

The interdisciplinary minor in environmental issues and management requires 12 credit hours of 300/400-level courses selected from at least two different disciplines with a maximum of six credits from any one discipline. For completion of the interdisciplinary minor, students must have a minimum overall cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all courses specified as a requirement for the minor exclusive of lower-level courses and prerequisite courses. At least six hours of upper-level courses must be taken through courses offered by Old Dominion University. Three credit hours may be in the major, if a major course is listed as an option for the interdisciplinary minor. As such, it will be credited toward both the major and the interdisciplinary minor.
