The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications for a new tenure-track faculty position in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics with an anticipated start date of Fall 2018. This position is expected to be made at the Assistant Professor level but appointment at a higher level for exceptionally qualified candidates will be considered. This appointment will provide many opportunities for collaboration with the experimental and theoretical groups within the Department of Physics and at the nearby Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (www.jlab.org).

The ODU Physics Department (http://www.odu.edu/physics) has 21 faculty members specializing in nuclear and particle physics, atomic and few-body physics, accelerator physics, materials science and condensed matter physics. Old Dominion University is a dynamic metropolitan, residential, research-extensive public institution with an enrollment of 24,000+ students, including approximately 6,000 graduate students, and a full time equivalent faculty of over 850 of which 40% are women. The University's primary campus is located in Norfolk, VA, one of seven cities that make up the historic Hampton Roads region of Virginia. Programs are also offered at three Higher Education Centers in the region and through online distance education. Additional information about workload requirements and promotion policies may be found in the ODU Faculty Handbook: ww2.odu.edu/ao/facultyhandbook/index.php?page=ch02s22.html

Applications must be submitted online and include: a cover letter describing the individual's qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, a vision statement of Teaching Philosophy, a vision statement of Research, a reference list and an unofficial graduate transcript. The system will solicit letters of reference from your listed references. Application must be made through https://jobs.odu.edu/ Review of applications will begin on 8 January 2018 and continue until the position is filled. All materials will be held in confidence.

Old Dominion University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in physics or a closely related field, be able to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in research. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and develop a new, externally funded research program in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. Preference will be given to applicants possessing a strong research record and experience in low-temperature physics and investigation of electromagnetic properties of new superconducting materials in microwave or radio-frequency fields. We expect the new faculty member to be associated with the ODU Center for Accelerator Science and to contribute significantly to ongoing studies of new superconducting materials for the next generation of particle accelerators as well as to initiate new research directions.

NOTES:
Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience. Old Dominion University offers competitive research start up packages and excellent university benefits.
