Post By Elham Alijanpour
We are looking for volunteers to participate in a research study at Old Dominion University about how people walk and how walking can be improved through real-time feedback.
Who can participate?
· Adults 18 to 84 years old
· Able to walk comfortably on a treadmill for about 8 minutes without stopping
· No major injuries, chronic pain, or health problems (such as history of heart attack, stroke, shortness of breath, dizziness, uncontrolled high blood pressure) that affect walking
· No fall history in the past three years, defined as an unintentional and unexpected loss of balance that required you to rest on the ground
What will you do in the study?
· Attend two lab sessions, each lasting about 2 hours, with breaks
· Wear reflective markers and a lightweight mask to measure breathing while walking on a treadmill
· Perform different walking tasks, including walking at your normal speed, slower and faster speeds, and walking with visual feedback
· Visual feedback may look like simple interactive games, such as guiding a shuttle to a moon or ocean, based on your walking patterns
· You can stop or take a break at any time during the sessions
Where will the study take place?
Ellmer College of Health Sciences, Virtual Reality Lab at Old Dominion University
Is it safe?
· You will wear a safety harness during all treadmill walking
· The study has been reviewed and approved by the EVMS Institutional Review Board (IRB), approval number: 25-09-FB-0212
