Neighborhood Markers Art Mural Unveiled at CHKD Thrift Store

The Neighborhood Markers community mural, a large-scale public art project spearheaded by the Art Department at Old Dominion University and the NEON District, was unveiled on Mother's Day at The CHKD Thrift Store on Monticello Avenue in Norfolk.

Local teens and adults participated in more than 300 painting visits for the "paint-by-number" process to create the mural. It was designed by Natalia Pilato, art education program director and assistant professor in the Department of Art, and her ODU students with input from the Young Terrace community. The 1,500-square-foot artwork represents community unity and celebrates neighborhood youths.

Other partners in the project include the Downtown Norfolk Council, P.B. Young Elementary School, Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Young Terrace Community Center and The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
