Our Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship provides fellows with the background knowledge, clinical and research experience necessary to deliver excellent care to children suspected of having been abused or neglected.
During our three-year training, fellows work in CHKD's Child Advocacy Center, which provides forensic interviews, medical evaluations, psychological testing, case management, family advocacy, psychotherapy and other services.
Clinical Activities
Fellows will become clinically proficient in the evaluation, care, and treatment of child and adolescent victims of abuse and or neglect, as well as the differential diagnosis of abuse and identification of accidental injury.
Fellows perform inpatient and outpatient consultations on a variety of patients. They work closely with the sexual assault nursing program who provide acute sexual assault examinations. Child Abuse Clinic operates 5 days per week and urgent cases can be scheduled as they arise.
Fellows also participate in:
- Multidisciplinary team evaluation as a medical representative on cases in jurisdictions across seven regional cities and several branches of the military.
- Collaboration with mental health team regarding patient care and follow-up services.
- Forensic Interview Training.
- Rotation in forensic pathology and ongoing joint case evaluations.
Teaching Activities
Fellows in our program develop and demonstrate their teaching competence in the following ways:
- Give lectures regarding all aspects of child abuse and neglect, including training at national conferences.
- Present for both medical and non-medical audiences locally and nationally.
- Teach and supervise trainees during rotations.
Research Activities
Fellows will gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a productive investigator by participating in:
- Departmental and ODU-based epidemiology, statistics and research education.
- Design, implementation, completion and submission of a research project with the goal of presentation at a scientific meeting and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Mentorship from CHKD and CAP faculty.
