Provost's Spotlight

The Provost's Spotlight series is a forum to highlight the accomplishments of Old Dominion University faculty by offering the opportunity to speak with them about their scholarship, motivation, challenges, backgrounds, and personal interests. The Spotlight series uses a question-and-answer format to give the audience insight into our marvelous ODU colleagues.

The Spring 2023 Provost’s Spotlight honored Professor William Owings, Department of Educational Foundations & Leadership, who served 21 years at ODU focused on teacher quality, principal quality, and finance and student achievement. Dr. Owings completed a 50-year career in education in 2023, having served as a public-school teacher, high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. He is a distinguished Fellow of the National Education Finance Academy.

The Fall 2022 Provost's Spotlight honored Dr. Carolyn Rutledge professor, co-director for the Center for Telehealth Innovation, Education, and Research (C-TIER), associate chair, graduate program director in the School of Nursing and 2014 SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award Winner.

The Provost’s Spotlight held on April 18, 2022 honored Dr. Nina Brown, Professor and Eminent Scholar in the Department of Counseling and Human Services in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies.  Dr. Brown has taught at ODU for over 54 years and has written nearly 40 books.

Acclaimed Teacher, Honored at Nov. 1, 2021 Provost's Spotlight | Lawrence Weinstein, a professor of physics, University Professor and Eminent Scholar, was the guest of honor at the fall 2021 Provost's Spotlight, held Monday, Nov. 1, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the University Theatre. Dr. Weinstein is also a researcher at the Jefferson Lab. The Spotlight recorded event includes an introduction by Provost Augustine O. Agho and an interview conducted by CFD Director Annette Finley-Croswhite.

Dr. Khan Iftekharuddin is a Professor in Old Dominion University's Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in the Batten College of Engineering & Technology. He is also director of ODU's Vision Lab. Join us for an amazing conversation about his work with artificial intelligence. March 2, 2021.

Dr. Luisa A. Igloria, Louis I. Jaffe Endowed Professor, Professor of English and Creative Writing, University Professor, and Virginia's Poet Laureate (2020-2022) offers insight on her background, inspiration, and creative work at the September 2020 Provost's Spotlight. She also reads some of her poetry as part of the presentation.

Dr. Shaomin Li, Eminent Scholar and Professor of International Business, was born in Beijing and has had a long and successful career in the U.S. and at ODU where he is the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Award Winner from (SCHEV). In this Provost's Spotlight, Dr. Li shares his business insight and scholarship and introduces us to some of his artistic work as well. (October 30, 2019).

Dr. Richard Heller, Professor & Eminent Scholar in the Frank Reidy Center for Bioelectrics with the College of Health Sciences, offers insight into innovations in biomedical research and cancer treatment made during his outstanding career.

Dr. Helen Crompton, Associate Professor in the Department of Teaching & Learning and the 2018 SCHEV Rising Star awardee from ODU, discusses her work with mobile technologies. The United Nations has named Dr. Crompton one of nine mobile learning experts in the world.

Dr. Leposava Vušković, Professor of Physics and Eminent Scholar and Dr. Emilia Oleszak, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences discuss their careers as women in the sciences both here at Old Dominion University and in Europe.
