Making a Living: Working and Teaching as Artists

Paul Sanho Kim is a conductor, composer, and violinist who directs the symphony orchestra and teaches violin and conducting at Old Dominion University as an associate professor. He is also music director of the Orchestra of the Eastern Shore. Paul's compositions have been featured on NPR's Performance Today and by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Symphonicity. He was a fifteen-year violinist with the Roanoke Symphony and continues to perform on occasion with the Virginia Symphony. A former sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Dr. Kim holds music degrees from the University of Virginia, University of Maryland, and Shenandoah Conservatory.
Leslie Renn is an interdisciplinary artist, educator and life-long Virginian, having spent most of her early life bouncing between Northern Virginia, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Tidewater area of southeast Virginia. She received her BFA in fibers and printmaking from Old Dominion University in 2013 and her MFA in studio art at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2021. She has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad, including a collaborative project for the internationally touring exhibit Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here. Leslie is a veteran of the Iraq War and is an instructor with the veteran-artist led organization, Frontline Paper (formerly Combat Paper NJ,) where she helps other veterans and service members turn their military uniforms into paper. She teaches in the Department of Art at Old Dominion University and lives in Norfolk, Virginia with her husband and their two children.

Megan Thompson is a dance artist, co-founder of the Jen Stone and Megan Thompson Dance Project and director of the dance program at Old Dominion University. She completed her BS in dance at the University of Wisconsin, her MFA in dance at the University of Maryland and holds certifications in pilates, yoga and extreme moves. Megan's choreography has been curated and presented nationally and internationally at festivals such as the DUMBO Dance Festival (NYC), Mid-Atlantic Choreographers' Showcase (Richmond, VA), The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Scotland), The Isadora Festival (Russia), PANPAPANPAYLYA (Australia) and Performática (Mexico). In her research, Megan explores interdisciplinary and innovative methods of art-making with a focus on performance and interactive technology for unconventional formats and environments. Recent immersive installations and site-specific works have been presented in Norfolk, VA at The NEON Festival, The Chrysler Museum of Art and The Hermitage Museum and Gardens and internationally at The Ocean Dance Festival in Bangladesh.

ODU Dance Alumni Panel

Kaitlyn Hardiman is an arts practitioner, educator, and social researcher who believes that the arts of all modalities play a crucial role in shaping and renewing culture. In 2016, Kaitlyn graduated with her B.A. in dance through Old Dominion University and has since received her M.A. in arts leadership and cultural management through Colorado State University. Currently, she is a third-year doctoral student at the University of Kentucky, pursuing a Ph.D. in arts administration.
In early 2023, Kaitlyn founded Oklahoma Arts Management Solutions, a consulting firm that collaborates with arts organizations in Oklahoma and beyond to enhance their organizational capacity and community impact. Additionally, she is an adjunct professor for Oklahoma City University's Arts Administration master's program where she teaches coursework in Fundraising and Development for the Arts, Arts Leadership, Cultural Policy and Advocacy, Grant Writing, and Arts Entrepreneurship.
Taylor Warren grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia where her dance training began at Academie de Ballet. She has studied at numerous summer programs including the Joffrey Ballet School and The Rockettes Summer Intensive Invitational in New York City. She is a graduate of the Old Dominion University Dance Program and has a BSBA in business management.
Following graduation, Taylor was selected to join Broadway Dance Center's Professional Semester Program in New York City. Upon completing this program, Taylor went on to perform with Norwegian Cruise Lines in the production cast of "Elements," "Palace of Lights," and "Blazing Boots." Taylor has also danced in multiple shows for SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment including "Phantoms of the Festhaus" and "Up on the Haustop" at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. Additionally, Taylor has worked with Dublin Worldwide Productions, dancing in the inaugural cast of "Cabaret Le Cirque" in Reno, Nevada and recently traveled to Tokyo, Japan to perform in "Broadway Christmas Wonderland" at the Orb Theater. Taylor is grateful for the opportunities she has had thus far and is excited to see where her dance career takes her next!
