Personal Privacy for Loved Ones

Whether you have the care of younger children or not, these privacy tips from StaySafeOnline can help manage personal privacy for you and your loved ones in an increasingly online world.

Privacy Tips for Parents:

  • Personal information is like money. Value it. Protect it. – awareness and discretion in what is shared and what is not shared online are valuable discussions to have.

  • What happens online stays online. – even temporarily displayed information can easily be copied and preserved by someone. It is very difficult to get back what is shared online. Consider who may see a post and how it may be percieved in the future.

  • Own your online presence. – Learn how to use privacy features on your games, apps, and platforms. Take some time to purposefully configure privacy settings.

  • Remain positively engaged. – Help your loved ones to understand that not all sites are friendly. Help them select safe and trusted sites and applications. Encourage caution about downloading, uploading, posting, or clicking on links.

  • Post about others as you would have them post about you. – The Golden Rule applies to online interactions, and we can be a positive or negative force to those we encounter online.

  • Be honest about threats. – Be open and honest (without being perceived as being “alarmist”) about the threats faces online and the value of protecting privacy.
