ODU Recognized for Ongoing Environmental Stewardship with "Riverstars" Award

Old Dominion University was recently recognized for its ongoing environmental stewardship efforts by the Elizabeth River Project during the group's annual recognition luncheon.

The organization, which champions environmental restoration efforts along the Elizabeth River, recognized ODU for "Sustained Distinguished Performance."

In making the proclamation, the group cited the University's launch of the "Monarchs for Monarchs" program, which included installation of 1,200 milkweed plants on campus to provide host food and habitats for migrating Monarch butterflies; and a switch to a more environmentally-friendly de-icer product for roads and walkways.

ODU joined the Elizabeth River Project's "River Stars" program in 2004 and has won numerous accolades since that time. Last year, the University received the group's highest accolade when it was named the 2014 "Inside Business Hall of Fame" winner.

That award was made in recognition of how "bought-in" Old Dominion has become since 2004 in implementing environmentally sustainable practices.

According to a write-up the Elizabeth River Project published at the time: "There's now hardly a green practice that can't be found on the campus, from rain gardens, to wetland restorations, building efficiencies, underground cisterns, green roofs and a weeklong Earth Day celebration, Blue Goes Green Week."
