WALK FOR EDUCATION CULMINATES IN TECH FEST IN CAMPOSTELLA

Teaming up with Norfolk State University (NSU), Hampton University (HU), and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), members of Old Dominion University's (ODU) National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) participated in the first-ever Walk for Education and Tech Fest this past month. Led by NSBE president William Chambers, fellow NSBE officers and members, Aaron Corbett, Jamahl Sapp and Sipho Adams, represented ODU in the Walk for Education that occurred in the communities surrounding Campostella Elementary School. The engineering and technology students from the universities went door-to-door delivering over 400 information packets and spreading awareness about the field of engineering, STEM, and the NSBE organization.

Following their community walk-through, students from the participating universities reconvened at Campostella Elementary for the second of the day's events, Tech Fest, a program hosted to help spark engineering interest in underrepresented youth. Each university planned activities for the youth in attendance. The activities designed and concoct organized by ODU were concocting slime - an overwhelming favorite of the children in attendance - and constructing sculptures out of gum drops and toothpicks. Parents were also encouraged to join in the fun. Other activities of the fest included technology exhibits, teacher presentations and a rocket launch.
