PENINSULA HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER HOSTS TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE AND OPEN HOUSE

Multidisciplinary, 3-D technology, which can help teach, train and imagine the future, was on display at the Technology Showcase and Open House on Sept. 27 at Old Dominion University's Peninsula Higher Education Center.

ODU's Batten College of Engineering and Technology, College of Business and Public Administration, and Department of Computer Science hosted the event at the center, which is located at 600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton.

The daylong event featured displays by Microsoft, Anybots, EON Reality and ODU's Center for Advanced Engineering Environments (CAEE). Demonstrations and an open house rounded out the day's events.

Attendees had an opportunity to see how 3-D technology is changing how we learn, teach, train and do business, and also to meet with college representatives and admissions counselors to discuss Old Dominion and the Peninsula Center as options for academic study.

Microsoft had representatives on hand to demonstrate its advanced interfaces, including Microsoft Kinect for Windows and the company's brain-based interface (thought control of the computer).

Ahmed Noor, ODU professor of engineering and CAEE director, led demonstrations of the center's research into advanced learning environments and networks.

Since 2001, CAEE researchers have worked closely with researchers from NASA, other universities and major software vendors to incorporate new developments into commercial systems, making research advances available to industry in a timely manner.

The Peninsula Higher Education Center is a state-of-the-art academic facility aligned with ODU's mission to promote the advancement of knowledge. The Peninsula Center supports a wide array of graduate and undergraduate programs that meet the needs of the local community.

The center currently offers 24 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs with more than 200 classes scheduled each week. Education programs include teacher licensure, as well as advanced degrees in instruction and administration.

The center is also home to CAEE and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium.
