JOSHI INTRODUCES OCEAN LAKES MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY AT ODU

Ravi Joshi, University Professor and Eminent Scholar in the department of electrical & computer engineering, brought enthusiastic high school students onto campus as part of an effort to increase STEM awareness in high schools.

The program, the Ocean Lakes Math & Science Academy at ODU, which brought the students to ODU is a first. The math and science academy demonstrated a concerted effort between the Batten College of Engineering and Technology in affiliating with a local high school for the purpose of STEM education.

Colleagues from the Batten College of Engineering and Technology as well as the College of Sciences at ODU partnered with Joshi to act as mentors for 13 Ocean Lakes High School students including three female students. The engineering faculty mentors, who had anywhere from one to three high school mentees, were Dean Krusienski, Muhammad Malik, Shu Xiao, and Khan Iftekharuddin.

The students from Ocean Lakes worked with mentors over the summer to complete a wide range of STEM-related projects which were invented by the faculty from the Colleges of Engineering and Sciences. Once approved, the projects were then forwarded to Ocean Lakes earlier in the year to prepare the students for their summer ventures.
