ODU Mathematician John Adam to Discuss His Book 'X and the City' on 'With Good Reason'
John Adam, professor of mathematics and statistics at Old Dominion University, will talk about his new book, "X and the City: The Mathematics of Urban Life," on an upcoming episode of the public radio show "With Good Reason."
He will appear on the Thursday, Aug. 9 edition of the show, airing at 1:30 p.m. on WHRV-FM, 89.5.
Adam won the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in 2007 largely because of his reputation for creating ways to make math interesting to his students and to the readers of his popular books.
"X and the City" is designed to answer the question: What has mathematics to say about life in the city? Adam's answer: More than you expect. "Mathematics helps us understand how cities and their populations grow - both for people and bedbugs," Adam said. He uses math to explain aspects of urban life from population growth to something called "taxi cab geometry."
Adam will appear on the show with Jim Borling, a music therapist from Radford University.
