Karim Among Top Authors of Applied Optics Journal

Mohammad Karim, vice president for research at Old Dominion University, has been recognized by the journal Applied Optics as one of its Top 50 authors during the publication's 50-year history.

To celebrate its golden anniversary this year, Applied Optics has placed on its website a list of the Top 50 authors, ranked by number of articles published in the journal. Karim is at 29th, with 51 articles published. Those articles have been cited by other researchers 943 times.

Applied Optics, a publication of the Optical Society of America, disseminates articles emphasizing applications-centered research in optics, moving the potential of science and technology to the practical. Topic areas range from optical technology to information processing to lasers, photonics and environmental optics.

More about the top authors and links to their articles are at http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ao/journal/ao/anniversary/50mostpublished.cfm.

"As Applied Optics celebrates its golden anniversary, we would like to take a moment to recognize the high-quality research that you, our loyal authors, have contributed to the journal during the last 50 years," the journal's editor writes in the introduction to the Top 50 list.

The Top 50 listing has links to all of Karim's 51 articles. The first two from 1987 are articles for which Karim was the first author: "Polarization-encoded Optical Shadow-casting Logic Units: Design" and "Refracting System for Annular Laser Beam Transformation." The 51st entry from 2005 is one that Karim co-authored, "Biometric Recognition Systems: Introduction."

Karim, who joined ODU in 2004 as vice president for research, has a multidisciplinary background and holds graduate degrees in physics and electrical engineering. He also has been elected six times as a Fellow of science and technology organizations, more than any other ODU faculty member or administrator. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Optical Society of America, the Society of Photo-Instrumentation Engineers, the Institute of Physics, the Institution of Engineering & Technology and the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
