DOCTORAL MENTORING AWARD

Hani Elsayed-Ali, professor and Eminent Scholar of electrical and computer engineering, won the Doctoral Mentoring Award at the Faculty Awards and Retirement Dinner on May 1.

He joined Old Dominion in 1992 and his current research interests are mainly in ultrafast laser probing of surface and thin film reactions. He has authored and co-authored more than 60 refereed journal articles and holds one patent. In 2000, he was the recipient of the 16th Annual Faculty Research Award at ODU.

"During his twenty years at Old Dominion University, Hani has certainly been one of the most prolific researchers in our College. We are proud and humbled to count him as one of our own," said Dean Oktay Baysal.

His master's and Ph.D. degrees, in electrical engineering, are both from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Upon graduation, he worked as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Illinois conducting research in the areas of gas discharges and thin film deposition. In 1985, he joined the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester as a scientist.

Since joining Old Dominion, Elsayed-Ali has authored and co-authored over 60 refereed journal articles and holds one patent. As a mentor to many doctoral students, Elsayed-Ali also has helped to develop a future generation of scientific experts. He has been principal investigator for approximately $200,000 per year in externally funded research since joining the faculty. In addition, he currently serves on two collaborative grants with fellow university faculty.
