ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER BRINGS OUT BEST OF COLLEGE
Old Dominion University's Batten College of Engineering and Technology announced its annual faculty, staff and student awards at a dinner April 24.
In a letter to the college, Dean Oktay Baysal wrote that at the end of a busy semester, "A joyful thing for me to do is announce the winners of the 14th Annual Batten College Excellence Awards. Before doing so, however, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to our college. I applaud each and every one of your for your contributions."
Five Excellence Awards were presented to ODU faculty and staff, along with 15 student awards.
The Excellence Award in Teaching was presented to Arthur Taylor, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
The Excellence Award in Research was presented to Sylvain Marsillac, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and an expert in solar energy research who received more than $1 million in Department of Energy grant funding during the school year.
The Excellence Award in Advising was presented to Hani Elsayed-Ali, professor and Eminent Scholar in mechanical and aerospace engineering, and director of ODU's Applied Research Center in Newport News.
The Excellence Award in Engagement was presented to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Visiting Council, which, among other things, oversaw the Batten College's participation in the Department of Energy's 2011 Solar Decathlon finals in Washington, D.C.
The Excellence Award in Support Operations was presented to Susan Craig, intern co-op office coordinator with ODU's Career Management Center, assigned to the Batten College.
