APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
ELIZABETH FRANCIS GILES, senior lecturer of physical therapy and director of clinical education, elected chair of the Virginia Department of Health Commissioner's Advisory Committee on Minority Health and Health Equity. Her term expires in 2015.
INGO HEIDBRINK, professor of history, invited to join the editorial board of the International Journal of Maritime History, the most relevant journal worldwide for maritime history research.
JOYCE NEFF, professor of English, elected in April as chair of the National Consortium of Doctoral Programs in Rhetoric and Composition. She will lead the consortium, which represents more than 70 doctoral programs, for two years.
CHRIS WOOD, associate professor of education, New College Institute, master's in counseling program, Martinsville, Va., in April became head editor of Professional School Counseling, the flagship journal for the school counseling field (published by the American School Counseling Association). It is distributed to 29,000 practicing school counselors and school counselor educators.
AWARDS
ANDREAS TOLK, professor of engineering management and systems engineering and modeling, simulation and visualization engineering, the Outstanding Professional Contribution Award from the Society for Modeling and Simulation for his work on interoperability and composability.
BOOKS
BURTON ST. JOHN III, associate professor of communication, and Kirsten Johnson, associate professor of communication, Elizabethtown College, editors of "News with a View: Essays on the Eclipse of Objectivity in Modern Journalism" (McFarland, 2012).
Melvin H. Williams, eminent scholar emeritus of human movement sciences, the 10th edition of "Nutrition for Health, Fitness, & Sport" (McGraw-Hill). Co-authors are Dawn Hill from Winona State University and Eric Rawson from Bloomsburg University.
PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS
JOHN ADAM, University Professor of mathematics and statistics, a workshop, "Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematical Modeling at the Undergraduate Level," for faculty at both the University of Washington (UWB - the Bothell campus) and Cascadia Community College. He also gave a public lecture at UWB on "Mathematical Patterns in Nature." Also, a talk, "Noticing Mathematical Patterns in Nature," to faculty and members of the Math and Computer Science Club and the Society of Physics Students at Hampden-Sydney College.
AUSTIN JERSILD, associate professor of history, "Socialist Bloc Komandirovka and Its Consequences in China, 1950-1960" at the conference on "Mao's China, Non-Communist Asia, and the Global Setting, 1949-1976," Hong Kong University.
JAMES SWEENEY, associate professor emeritus of history, "Senator Harry F. Byrd: Prophet Without Honor?" at the seventh annual Virginia Forum conference on Virginia history at James Madison University.

JEFFREY JONES, director of the Institute of Humanities, guest editor (with Geoffrey Baym) of a special double Issue, "Not Necessarily the News? Global Approaches to News Parody and Political Satire" in vol. 10 of Popular Communication. They also are the authors of "News Parody in Global Perspective: Politics, Power, and Resistance," which is included in the journal.
