Career Management Center Staff Member Lynn Merrill Dies

Lynn Pleninger Merrill, 72, of Virginia Beach, an hourly staff member in the Career Management Center at Old Dominion, died at her home on April 30, 2012, after a short illness. She had worked in the CMC as an education support specialist since September 2009.

Merrill was born to the late Eugene and Laurel Pleninger, April 9, 1940 in Wilmington, Del. She grew up in Charleston, W.Va., and graduated from St. Catherine's School in Richmond in 1958. She was married in 1959 and attended Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y.

She had a great mind for math and detail and found her niche as a computer programmer when she began her career in Charleston at Business Computer Services in 1972. She moved to Virginia Beach in 1984, where she worked for Computer Science Corp., and later for Tidewater Consultants.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses: Margaret Merrill Jones and Randy Robert Jones of Williamsburg and John Buffington Merrill III and Katharine Lockwood Merrill, of Virginia Beach; and by five grandchildren: Merrill and Liza Jones, both of Williamsburg, and John Merrill IV, Popham and Mary Evarts Merrill, all of Virginia Beach.

Merrill is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law: Michael and Marcia Pleninger of Williamsburg, and Andrew and Sharon Pleninger of Cherry Hill, N.J.

A memorial service was held May 3. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hdoliver.com.
