APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
JAMES ALAN NEFF, professor of community health, appointed to the board of directors as well as chair of the Membership Committee of the American Academy of Health Behavior at its annual meeting in Austin, Texas, in March.
HARRY ZHANG, associate professor of community and environmental health, an invitation from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to serve as a standing member of the Healthcare Effectiveness and Outcomes Research study section. He will serve a three-year term, from March 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2015. AHRQ is a $611 million annual budget agency under DHHS and plays an important role in the health care reform.
AWARDS
JOHN BRODERICK, president, the American College Personnel Association's Contribution to Higher Education Award.
KATE BRODERICK, faculty and community liaison with the Office of Educational Accessibility, a 2012 Humanitarian Award from the Tidewater chapter of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities.
DAVID BURDIGE, professor and Eminent Scholar of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, inducted into the Gordon Research Conferences "Hall of Fame" in recognition of his outstanding work in chairing the Chemical Oceanography Gordon Conference last summer.
GARY EDGERTON, professor and chair of communication and theatre arts, awarded the Top Paper ("The Sopranos as Tipping Point in the Recent Resurgence of HBO") in the History Division of the Broadcast Education Association (BEA). He will deliver the paper at the BEA's annual conference in Las Vegas on April 16. This paper is also derived from the first chapter of "The Sopranos," which will be published in spring 2013 as part of the TV Milestones series from Wayne State University Press http://www.garyedgerton.com/sopranos.
JON SIOREDAS, wrestling assistant coach, inducted into the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Athletics Hall of Fame.
LINDA VAHALA, associate dean, Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, the Distinguished Service Award from the Engineers Club of Hampton Roads.
BONNIE VAN LUNEN, associate professor of human movement sciences, selected as one of the National Athletic Trainers' Association's 2012 Fellows. The Fellows program recognizes professional achievement in research and/or education, combined with service to the profession. Only the most accomplished scholars in the athletic training profession earn this distinction and are allowed to use the prestigious designation of FNATA. The 2012 class of Fellows will be recognized during the NATA Annual Meeting in St. Louis on June 28.

ANDREAS TOLK, professor of engineering management, "Engineering Principles of Combat Modeling and Distributed Simulation" (Wiley, 2012).
PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS
JOHN ADAM, professor and University Professor of mathematics, "Guesstimation: 'Ballpark' Numbers, the Geometric Mean and the Goldilocks Principle" and "Noticing Mathematical Patterns in Nature," plus a math panel discussion at the 30th anniversary Conference of the National Institute for Learning Development in Orlando, Fla. Also, a talk on "Direct and Inverse Problems for Radially Inhomogeneous Spheres, with Applications to Rainbow Refractometry and Optical Fiber Studies" to students and faculty in STEM disciplines at Virginia State University in Petersburg.
PAMELA ARNOLD, research associate, The Center for Educational Partnerships, a pre-conference workshop for deans of schools of education regarding implications of center research on the education of military-connected children for teacher preparation programs at the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education annual meeting in Chicago. The center report, of which she was lead author, is also being promulgated by AACTE nationally as an exemplar of how universities can engage schools in military-connected communities.
JAMES ALAN NEFF, professor of community health, "A Web-based Application to Generate Personalized Feedback for a Dental Practice-based Alcohol Intervention" at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Health Behavior in Austin, Texas, in March. Other ODU collaborators involved in the presentation included, from psychology, MICHELLE KELLEY, professor, JAMES PAULSON, associate professor, and ABBY BRAITMAN, Ph.D. candidate, and from dental hygiene, MICHELE DARBY, professor and chair, and MEG LEMASTER, assistant professor.
DYLAN WITTKOWER, assistant professor of philosophy, "Reification 2.0," a presentation by invitation in the opening plenary session of Unlike Us: Understanding Social Media Monopolies and Their Alternatives, hosted by the Institute of Network Cultures, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Mondriaan Fonds, and the Foundation for Democracy and Media.
