Wojtowicz to Discuss Digital Images in the Teaching of Art History for Provost's Series
The Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning, a brown bag lunch series, resumes Thursday, March 15, with a discussion led by Robert Wojtowicz, professor of art history and associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Arts and Letters.
Presented by the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT), the Office of Distance Learning and Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Carol Simpson, the Conversations are open to all faculty members, and offer the opportunity to reflect and share about the teaching and learning process.
Wojtowicz will speak on "Adapting or Perishing: How Digital Images Are Transforming the Teaching of Art History" from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons Conference Room at Perry Library.
The teaching of art history is a vicarious experience, since images projected in a darkened classroom substitute for physical works of art or architecture. Technology has thus been an intrinsic part of the discipline for more than 100 years. In his talk, Wojtowicz will discuss how art history found itself in near-crisis mode at the turn of the millennium, as analog slide photography gave way to digital imaging.
Many senior art historians retired reluctantly rather than adapt to the new technology, even as junior art historians rose enthusiastically to meet the new challenge. Wojtowicz's conversation will conclude with an examination of some of the latest digital tools and the ways in which they can enhance students' understanding of art history.
Wojtowicz received a Ph.D. in the history of art from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990, an M.A. in art history and archaeology from Columbia University in 1984, and an M.A. and B.A. in American civilization from the University of Pennsylvania in 1983. He is an expert on the life and work of cultural critic Lewis Mumford.
