NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTER TO SHARE IN TRANSPORTATION GRANTS
Several Virginia and West Virginia universities are sharing millions in research grant money from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced $77 million in grants to schools throughout the country this week.
The funding will be used to advance research and education programs that address critical transportation challenges facing the country.
Old Dominion University (ODU) is joined by other Virginia and West Virginia universities in participating in transportation research and education programs. Particularly noteworthy for the university is the tier one national research center that has emanated from the funding received through said grants.
The Transportation Research Center was created to deal with a variety of issues related to mobility, safety, planning, freight, and energy on surface transportation systems. A Transportation Research Cluster was concomitantly formed to facilitate interdisciplinary transportation research among faculty in different academic departments, particularly for multimodal and intermodal problems. Transportation faculty, various governmental agencies, and private sector firms are conducting research within the cluster.
The research ranges from rail corridors, innovations in freight, bridge inspection, and reducing roadway fatalities and injuries.
