Physical Therapy Students, Faculty Provide Services at Beach Health Clinic

Doctoral students and faculty members from Old Dominion University's School of Physical Therapy are literally reaching out to help patients at the Beach Health Clinic, a volunteer-based facility that provides medical services to the uninsured of Virginia Beach.

Working with Dr. David Young, a retired orthopedic surgeon and member of the ODU College of Health Sciences Advisory Board, the ODU students and faculty recently began providing physical therapy services to clients at the free/low-cost clinic, including evaluations, home care programs and appropriate treatments such as stretching and therapeutic exercise.

It's not only a great opportunity for the students to get hands-on experience treating patients, but it also is in keeping with ODU's ongoing commitment to engage and serve the Hampton Roads community.

"We are thrilled to be able to have this partnership with ODU to help serve our patients and our community," said Susan Hellstrom, executive director of the Beach Health Clinic.

Shelley Mishoe, the dean of ODU's College of Health Sciences, said she is grateful for the inspiration of Dr. Young and the dedication of the students and faculty. "I commend Dr. Young, who envisioned physical therapy services at the Beach clinic, and appreciate the faculty and students from the School of Physical Therapy for their enthusiastic response to help others in need."
