New Faculty Member Joins ODU Economic Forecasting Project

The team of Old Dominion University researchers responsible for producing regional and national economic forecasts for the Economics Club of Hampton Roads' annual Economic Outlook Conference, which is scheduled for Jan. 25 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, has a new faculty member.

With long-time team member Gilbert Yochum now the dean of the university's College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA), Gary Wagner was appointed recently as an associate of the ODU Economic Forecasting Project.

A professor of economics who joined the university last month, Wagner will work with Vinod Agarwal, professor of economics and director of the Economic Forecasting Project, and Mohammad Najand, professor of finance, in producing the report, which is widely respected as an accurate harbinger of the year ahead for the region.

Prior to joining the CBPA, Wagner held faculty positions at Duquesne University, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a finance specialist who explores the motivation and consequences of government policies and institutions. His research has appeared in many academic journals, including the Journal of Law and Economics, National Tax Journal, Public Choice, and Public Finance Review. He has given more than 30 presentations at professional conferences, and has been interviewed by more than 100 national and local media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today.

Presented by TowneBank, the Economic Outlook Conference begins at 10:30 a.m. with the 2012 Hampton Roads regional economic forecast, presented by Agarwal. From noon to 1:30 p.m., Najand will present the 2012 national economic forecast.

Reservations are required for the luncheon program. Register online at 2012econforecast.eventbrite.com or call 683-5138. There is a $40 luncheon fee for non-members of the Economics Club of Hampton Roads. For more information about the ODU Economic Forecasting Project, see www.odu.edu/forecasting.

The Economics Club of Hampton Roads co-sponsors the Economic Outlook Conference as part of its annual program of events and speakers aimed at engaging the local population in important economic issues.
