NOAA Speaker to Kick Off CCPO Series

Old Dominion's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) celebrates its 20th anniversary year with a special Spring 2012 Seminar Series featuring guest speakers who have worked with CCPO over the years.

The first spring series speaker on Monday, Jan. 23, will be Andrew Larkin, a communications and outreach specialist for the Chesapeake Bay Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and for NOAA's National Ocean Service. His talk is titled "Eyes on the Bay: The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System (CBIBS)."

Free and open to the public, the lecture begins at 3:30 p.m. in Room 3200 of Innovation Research Park Building 1 in University Village. A reception with refreshments begins at 3 p.m.

CBIBS, the only real-time, continuous monitoring network situated in the Chesapeake Bay, provides meteorological, oceanographic and water quality data to a variety of marine users. Data from its 10 buoys help us understand the bay's changing conditions, which is valuable information for fishermen, boat captains, educators and forecasters to have. Larkin will explain how NOAA is working to connect more users to the system using phones and social media.
