Faculty Workshop and Comedy Show 'DEAFology 101' on Tap for Jan. 23
Old Dominion will explore Deaf culture via three programs offered this month as part of the Office of Intercultural Relations' Social Entrepreneurship series.
A comedy show about Deaf culture the evening of Monday, Jan. 23, featuring Ken Glickman, will be preceded earlier in the day by a faculty development workshop, "Deaf Proverbs."
Glickman, also known as "Prof. Glick," will conduct the free workshop from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Rectors' Room of Webb Center. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by Jan. 18 at http://bit.ly/deafproverbs.
Born profoundly deaf, Glickman joined IBM as a computer programmer and has taught programming and computer graphics at National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology and at Gallaudet University. He left IBM to establish DEAFinitely Yours Studio in Silver Spring, Md.
Glickman is the author of several books on Deaf culture, including "DEAFinitions," "Deaf Proverbs" and "More DEAFinitions!" which will be available for purchase at the workshop.
Glickman's comedy show, "DEAFology 101," is free and open to the public. It is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Center for the Performing Arts and will be preceded by a reception at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited; those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to rsvp@odu.edu.
Many situations unique to the world of the deaf will be explored and explained on stage by "Prof Glick," dressed in his comical lab coat and beady black reading glasses. Just about everything, from anthropology to biology to physics, is covered in this hilarious, fast-paced course. Glickman's books will be available for purchase at the show.
A related program, "Language in the Academy: Deconstructing the Language of Disability in the Deaf and Blind Communities," will be presented by David Thomas, a Ph.D. candidate in ODU's higher education program, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Intercultural Center (2114 Webb Center).
This Faculty Voice Brown Bag Lecture and the programs presented by Glickman are sponsored by several university offices, departments and organizations, including the Division of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services, the Office of Intercultural Relations and the Office of Educational Accessibility.
