CCPO Speaker Has Assessed Phytoplankton Growth After Storms

Katherine Filippino, an oceanographer researcher at Old Dominion University, will present her research on the effect of intense storms on phytoplankton productivity in the James River at a seminar of the university's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) on Monday, Jan. 30.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, begins at 3:30 p.m. in Room 3200 of the Innovation Research Park Building 1. A reception with refreshments begins at 3 p.m.

Filippino, who received her Ph.D. from ODU and who now works in the lab of Margaret Mulholland, associate professor of oceanography, will focus on the fallout from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. The work shows that storms can potentially set up conditions that influence algal dynamics long after the event has passed. Filippino's research provides a baseline for evaluating these effects.
