Auditions for Hampton Roads Youth Wind Ensemble to Be Held Feb. 11

The Community Music Division of Old Dominion University will hold auditions for the Hampton Roads Youth Wind Ensemble (HRYWE) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. All students should prepare a brief piece that demonstrates their best musical ability.

Students will also be asked to sight-read a brief musical excerpt. Snare drum players will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in the standard 26 American drum rudiments. Timpani students will be asked to tune timpani using a pitch pipe. Percussion students may be asked to sight-read auxiliary parts as well.

Membership in the HRYWE is open to students in grades 7-12 who are currently enrolled in their school band program. Home-schooled students in the same grade range are also welcome to audition. Auditions are free and students must complete a successful audition in order to gain membership in the HRYWE. If accepted into the program, the cost is $130 per student. Rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in ODU's Diehn Center for the Performing Arts.

Formed in 1999, HRYWE is a unique performance outlet for band students interested in performing with a group of dedicated, like-minded students who are serious about music. It affords young musicians a chance to grow by allowing them to work closely with conductor Ledford Wilson and coaches over a long period of time, in a college setting, through weekly sectionals and rehearsals.

The HRYWE experience draws young musicians from throughout Hampton Roads, enabling them to form lasting friendships with people whom they might not otherwise meet. In addition to positive educational benefits and challenges, HRYWE is a focus for community pride and a testament to the talent of youth in the area.

To make an appointment for an audition, send an email to oducmd@odu.edu. Students who are unable to audition on Feb. 11 can request alternate times.
