VMEC RECOGNIZES MCDERMOTT AT FALL MEETING
The 2011 Virginia Microelectronics Consortium (VMEC) Fall Meeting was held on September 9, 2011, at Micron Technology, Inc., located in Manassas, VA. At this meeting, the Summer Scholars students presented their respective posters pertinent to their summer research projects.
An electrical engineering undergraduate student, Benjamin McDermott, won the first prize in the VMEC Poster Competition. McDermott's poster was titled: "Simple Implantable Drug Diffusion Delivery Device". The research described by the poster gave insight into a fresh way of treating macular degeneration in the eye. Techniques bringing together the fields of rapid prototyping, microelectronics, among others, were used in determining whether implantable drug diffusion would be a treatment option for the malady.
McDermott's research not only garnered him an award for his resultant poster but has also gained him a recommendation for the Provost's Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award.
Benjamin is an excellent example of an outstanding ODU undergraduate engineering student with great promise.
