APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
ELIZABETH GILES, director of clinical education in the School of Physical Therapy, has received three board and advisory committee appointments since graduating from the United Way of South Hampton Roads' Project Inclusion Board Governance Leadership and Development Program last spring. Project Inclusion benefits the Hampton Roads community by pursuing inclusiveness on boards and committees of nonprofit organizations and agencies. Two weeks prior to graduation, she was invited to serve a continuous appointment on the Kaplan College-Chesapeake campus Physical Therapist Assistant Program Advisory Board. In June, she was appointed by Dr. Karen Remley, commissioner of the Virginia Department of Health, to a four-year term on the Health Commissioner's Minority Health and Health Equity Advisory Committee. She is currently vice chair of the Data Subcommittee. In September, she was appointed by the Newport News City Council to a two-year term on the Mayor's Committee on Disabilities.
MOHAMMAD KARIM, vice president for research, named chair of the Finance Committee of the Southeastern Universities Research Association. He will serve a two-year term extending through 2013.
AWARDS/HONORS
KATHERINE HAMMOND, director of theatre, a Meritorious Achievement Award for Excellence in Directing by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for her production of "Red Bug," a mediated stage experience.
X. NANCY XU, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

D.E. WITTKOWER, assistant professor of philosophy, editor of "Philip K. Dick and Philosophy" (Chicago: Open Court, 2011). He also wrote two chapters: "Matt Damon Is a Vast Sinister Conspiracy" and "Time in Unfixed Are You" [sic].

JEFFREY JONES, director of the Institute of Humanities, "Studying Audiences for Political Television," a paper at the "Comedy and Politics" panel of the TV Comedy Conference, University of Wisconsin-Madison. KATHERINE HAMMOND, director of theatre, a master class, "Projections in Performance," for the National Educational Theatre Association in Chicago. She also was the media designer for the Virginia Stage Company CULTIVATE touring production of "Julius Caesar."
SHARON RAVER-LAMPMAN, professor of communication disorders and special education, "Parallel Talk: Effects on the Language and Interactional Skills of Preschoolers with Deafness" at the Ireland International Conference on Education in Dublin. Co-authors are JONNA BOBZIEN, lecturer, CORRIN RICHELS, assistant professor, PEGGY HESTER, professor, ANNE MICHALEEK, graduate student, and NICOLE ANTHONY, graduate student, communication disorders and special education. This was also published in the proceedings.
