ODU HOLDS OFFSHORE WIND CONFERENCE
The American Wind Energy Association estimates that half the components for U.S. wind turbines are manufactured outside the U.S. With Federal government commitments to fast-tracking the process and partnerships launched between one of the world's largest wind turbine manufacturers and largest ship-builders, Virginia is well on its way to becoming the East Coast capital for wind energy. With plentiful offshore winds, a deep water port and a skilled and experienced labor force supporting the potential creation of over 10,000 jobs, the opportunity is ripe for Virginia if it plays its cards right.
Consequently, Business Gateway designed the Virginia Offshore Wind Conference 2011 with those primacies in mind. For manufacturers interested in becoming suppliers to the offshore wind energy industry, including manufacturers who specialize in machining, composites fabrication, ductile iron castings, electrical and electronics; suppliers of equipment such as ladders, elevators, hoists, fire-suppression systems, lighting, cranes and riggings; vessel manufacturers; cable suppliers and installers; and offshore steel and concrete foundations suppliers, this conference helped them to explore the possibilities of our region.
The Virginia Offshore Wind Conference featured over 60 panelists ultimately tasked with fleshing out the barriers and issues involved with developing the Commonwealth's offshore wind resources. This "working" conference will also provide opportunities for industry leaders, stakeholders and policy-makers to meet face-to-face and together craft action plans for getting steel in the ground ASAP.
