ODU Announces Outstanding University Scholars

Nathan Rogers, a senior mathematics major who will graduate Saturday, Dec. 17, with a 4.0 grade point average, is Old Dominion University's latest Outstanding University Scholar.

Rogers, who hopes to teach high school mathematics, listed Mark Dorrepaal, professor of mathematics and statistics in the College of Sciences, as his most inspirational faculty member. "I would not be able to graduate without his help and guidance," he said.

Rogers, of Stafford, Va., was one of six Outstanding College Scholars recognized by the ODU Alumni Association at a dinner on Thursday, Dec. 15. The Alumni Association recognizes the undergraduate student in each college with the highest academic average above 3.40 who has completed at least 60 hours at the university at the time of selection.

The other College Scholars recognized at the event were Stephen Pezzulich of the College of Arts and Letters, Ricardo Elizalde of the College of Business and Public Administration, Brittney May of the Darden College of Education, Brittany Gesner of the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, and Christina McKee of the College of Health Sciences.

Pezzulich, who is graduating with a degree in music education on Saturday, is from Dumfries, Va. His GPA was 3.99.

Elizalde, of Kearny, N.J., is an accounting major with a minor in military leadership, graduating with a 3.89 GPA. He completed his degree through the Naval ROTC and is enrolled in the U.S. Navy's Seaman to Admiral 21 program.

May, of Forest, Va., majored in occupational/technical studies with a fashion merchandising concentration. She is graduating with a 3.95 GPA.

Gesner, of Gardner, Mass., will graduate with a degree in civil engineering. Gesner, who has a GPA of 3.98, will stay at ODU after graduation to pursue a master's degree.
