CCPO Speaker to Discuss Antarctic Water Circulation and Krill

Karen Heywood of the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, will visit Old Dominion University's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography on Monday, Nov. 7, to discuss her studies of the major currents and other water flows off Antarctica that affect the distribution of krill.

Her presentation, "Go with the Flow: Physical Processes in the Northwest Weddell Sea and Some Implications for Krill," will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Room 3200 of the Innovation Research Park Building 1. The seminar and a reception that begins at 3 p.m. are free and open to the public.

Krill are tiny, shrimplike crustaceans that are an important food source for whales and other sea creatures. Heywood's recent research into pathways taken by water masses helps to explain variations in the krill populations found at different times in various locations.

Her research focuses on large-scale observational oceanography. The work addresses the circulation, processes and dynamics of the polar oceans, the most critical part of the global climate system.
