Warner Is Guest Speaker for Oct. 24 Dinner Sponsored by World Affairs Council, ODU
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner will headline a dinner hosted by the World Affairs Council, in partnership with Old Dominion University's Economics Club of Hampton Roads and ODU Town-N-Gown, on Monday, Oct. 24.
Warner's speech - "A Discussion of the Global Economic Crisis and U.S. Economic Competitiveness" - is the first in the World Affairs Council's Distinguished Speaker Series. It is scheduled for Monday evening at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, starting with a reception at 5:45 p.m., then dinner at 6:30 p.m. Warner is scheduled to speak at 6:45 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $55 for members of the World Affairs Council or partners, $65 for the general public and $550 for a reserved table of 10. The cost for students is $20.

Warner was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2008, and serves on the Senate's Banking, Budget, Commerce and Intelligence committees. After 2 1/2 years in Congress, he has established himself as a national leader in efforts to find bipartisan, common-sense solutions to reduce the federal deficit.
From 2002-06, Warner served as governor of Virginia during its worst economic recession in 20 years. He worked in a bipartisan way to make state government more effective and affordable, and ultimately turned a record budget deficit into a surplus. When Warner left office in 2006, Virginia was recognized as the nation's "best-managed state," the "best state for business" and the state offering the best educational opportunities.
The World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads is a nonprofit educational organization furnishing community services and programs unduplicated by other agencies in the area. Its purpose is to promote education, study, discussion and understanding of world affairs, including all aspects of relations among peoples of the world, and of United States' foreign policy.
The Economics Club of Hampton Roads is an organization for business and government executives and community leaders who share an interest in the practical implications of economic principles, trends and events. It was established in 1991 as a community service by former ODU President James V. Koch, and is administered by the dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, under the supervision of an elected board.
Town-N-Gown is an organization that endeavors to foster a closer relationship between the community of Hampton Roads, national defense forces (the "N") and the university. Membership is open to ODU faculty and staff.
