ODU ENGINEER GUEST FOR 'WITH GOOD REASON' SHOW

The Earth's changing climate and its energy needs are the subject of an episode of the National Public Radio (NPR) show "With Good Reason," which feature the expertise of two Old Dominion University researchers: Dr. Sylvain Marsillac, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, and Victoria Hill, assistant research professor of biological oceanography in the College of Sciences. They appeared on the show "Sea Ice and Sunlight" broadcasted locally at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, on 89.5 WHRV-FM.

Dr. Marsillac discussed notably the energy crisis that we currently have worldwide and the attention it has brought to solar technologies as an alternative to oil. He also mentioned the importance of public awareness and private sector investment for the future of this industry sector but also due to the huge job creation potential this renewable energy source has. Dr. Marsillac, one of the nation's experts on photovoltaic energy, said the United States should continue to fund solar energy research if it wants to secure energy independence and not pass on a great business opportunity.

Dr. Marsillac's research at ODU focuses on studying new inorganic materials for renewable energy applications, developing innovative tools for in-situ and real-time analysis, and developing novel architectures and techniques for the fabrication of flexible and high efficiency solar cells.
