Model U.N. Society to Host ODU United Nations Day Oct. 21

The Old Dominion University Model United Nations Society will celebrate the founding of the U.N. at ODU United Nations Day on Friday, Oct. 21.

The annual simulation program, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center, typically features more than 100 ODU undergraduates, graduate students, visiting speakers and dignitaries.

Two topics will be discussed at the simulation: "Responding to Palestine's Bid for Statehood" and "African Hunger Crisis: Determining the Necessity and Means for Providing Aid and Future Prevention." The event is designed to introduce students to the procedures and methods of the United Nations General Assembly.

ODU's Model United Nations Society was established in 1977 to promote further understanding of the United Nations, international issues and the global community. The society's mission is to promote global, multicultural education and leadership experience through experiential learning, while stressing student participation in simulation conferences and courses.

The society currently has a membership of about 50 students, with majors ranging from political science and international studies to chemistry and military science.

All ODU students are welcome to participate in the program on Oct. 21. To register, students should send their top three country choices to the ODU U.N. Day secretary-general, Robbie Townsend, at rtown004@odu.edu. There is no fee to register, and academic excuse letters will be provided.
