APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
ALAN "WOODY" SCHWITZER, professor of counseling and human services, selected as one of the four department editors for About Campus magazine. About Campus is a joint publication of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and Jossey-Bass that focuses on student learning in higher education. He will be editor for the In Practice Department, in which authors share innovative approaches to learner success. Schwitzer also recently was appointed to the ACPA Book and Media editorial board, and is an expert reviewer for the Journal of American College Health and the Journal of College Student Development.
ANDREAS TOLK, professor for engineering management and systems engineering, served as special issue editor for the Journal of Simulation. Together with John Miller, a professor at the University of Georgia, he edited vol. 5, issue 3, Special Issue on Enhancing Simulation Composability and Interoperability Using Conceptual/Ontological Models. Also, Tolk and JOHN SOKOLOWSKI, executive director of VMASC and associate professor for modeling, simulation and visualization engineering, were elected to the board of directors of the Society for Modeling and Simulation. Tolk was elected for a three year-term and holds the position of secretary of the board. Sokolowski was elected for a one-year term..
AWARDS/HONORS
MICHAEL SEILER, professor and Robert M. Stanton Chair of Real Estate and Economic Development, and ANDREW COLLINS, research assistant professor, Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, a Governor's Technology Award for their innovative study of homeowners' strategic mortgage defaults. The project won in the category of Cross-Boundary Collaboration in Modeling and Simulation.
ELIZABETH SMITH, assistant research professor of oceanography, a Governor's Technology Award as project coordinator of Chesapeake (Bay) Inundation Prediction System (CIPS), which is a project of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and ODU's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography. The project won in the category of Innovative Use of Modeling and Simulation Techniques.

JOHN ADAM, University Professor and Professor of Mathematics: the paperback edition of his book "A Mathematical Nature Walk" has just appeared in print. An e-version of the book also is now available.
STEVE YETIV, University Professor of political science and international studies, "The Petroleum Triangle" (Cornell University Press).
PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS
KRISTINA BAUER, doctoral student in industrial/organizational psychology, KARIN ORVIS, assistant professor of psychology, and DEBRA MAJOR, professor of psychology, a paper titled "Facilitating Role of Supervisor Support in Training Transfer Outcomes: Meta-analytically Examining Main Effects and Moderators" at the American Psychological Association Convention in Washington, D.C.
SEAN HALL, doctoral student of counseling, and NINA BROWN, professor and eminent scholar of counseling and human services, a poster session at the August American Psychological Association conference, titled "Indicators of Potential for Harm in Training Groups: A Pilot Study." Brown was also a co-presenter of a symposium on "Successful Group Projects: Descriptions of Multidisciplinary Group Research" at the conference.
JONATHAN HOLLAND and THIVIA MOGAN, doctoral students in industrial/organizational psychology, a paper titled "Examining Benefits and Barriers to Capitalization in Computer Science and Engineering Undergraduates" at the American Psychological Association Convention in Washington, D.C. Co-authors are VALERIE MORGANSON, visiting assistant professor of psychology, DEBRA MAJOR, professor of psychology, and KARIN ORVIS, assistant professor of psychology.
DEBRA MAJOR, professor of psychology, and MEGHAN JONES, doctoral student in industrial/organizational psychology, chaired a symposium titled "Advances in Understanding Work-Family Coping" at the American Psychological Association Convention in Washington, D.C., in which the following two papers were presented: "Development and Validation of a Measure: Preventive Coping with WFC" (by Jones and Major) and "Antecedents of Policy-based and Individually Negotiated Work-Life Accommodation Seeking Intentions" (by HEATHER LAUZUN, doctoral student in industrial/organizational psychology, and Major).
STELLA BONDI, assistant professor of civil engineering technology, and ZIA RAZZAQ, professor of civil and environmental engineering, "Combined Bending with Induced or Applied Torsion of FRP I-Section Beams" at the 4th WSEAS International Conference on Engineering Mechanics, Structures, Engineering Geology (EMESEG '11) in Corfu, Greece. Lead presenter was Mojtaba Sirjani, professor of engineering at Norfolk State University and a former adjunct professor of structural engineering at ODU.

MICHAEL PEARSON, professor of creative writing, an essay, "We Must Walk the Camino Together," in the Sept. 22, 2011, issue of The Morning News.
