CETIN'STRAVEL DEMAND MODEL STUDY LATEST APPROVED BY VDOT

Transportation research has been on the rise at the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology. What is more, the research being done in this area has won the attention and interest of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

In the past month, Asad Khattak, the Frank Batten Endowed Chair Professor and director of the Transportation Research Institute, received two separate grants on projects he is working on within the field of transportation: the first, "Analysis of Virginia Add-On National Household Travel Survey and Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Household Travel Survey" and, the second, "Unmet Data Needs of Transportation Planners." Most recently, VDOT awarded yet another significant grant onto an ODU researcher.

Mecit Cetin of the civil and environmental engineering department has been awarded a grant towards his project entitled "Investigation of New Equilibrium Assignment Methods for the VDOT Travel Demand Models."

This research focuses on travel demand models. Travel demand models are widely used, and almost as widely lamented, throughout the United States. MPOs and other agencies using travel demand models have begun to transition to more advanced model forms in order to respond effectively to new policy and planning requirements.

Dr. Cetin has been conducting research in various areas of transportation, including modeling and simulation of traffic operations, congestion pricing, freight transportation, advanced traveler information systems, traffic signal control, probe vehicle technologies, and system state estimation in transportation networks.
