ODU Weather Alert

Old Dominion University officials are monitoring Hurricane Irene, which is currently on track for the Bahamas and is forecast to affect the east coast of the United States this weekend. The exact track of the hurricane along the east coast is still uncertain.

At this time, ODU officials are receiving regular updates from the National Weather Service. The university will announce a decision on the status of its residence halls at approximately noon Wednesday, Aug. 24. The decision will be announced via ODU email, ODU Alerts, and the university web site. To sign up for ODU Alerts, visit www.odu.edu/alerts.

For students and families with early check-in reservations on Wednesday, please proceed as planned. However, if the forecast indicates the need, those students may be asked to return home or make other accommodations. Additionally, if those families prefer, they can postpone their move until a decision about residence halls has been made.

If there is a need to close the residence halls, the university's academic calendar will be adjusted accordingly to allow sufficient time for move-in prior to the start of classes. Also, accommodations will be made for students already on campus who cannot return home (such as international students) and do not have other options (such as staying with friends).

As with any major storm, things can develop and change quickly. The ODU campus is reminded to keep informed by checking email or the university web site regularly.
