MAE HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL SUMMIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARS

In its second year, this free one-week (August 22-26) regional summer STEM enrichment program for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors returns to ODU. The program, called SUMMIT (SUmmer Experience in MEMS EngineerIng and Technology for High School Scholars), explores the engineering and technology of MEMS devices and will be led by Dr. Julie Hao, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, MEMS researcher, and SUMMIT Director.

This summer STEM program will feature a general introduction to careers in engineering, an overview of MEMS devices and associated technologies, exploration of MEMS manufacturing technologies, identification of popular applications, interactive MEMS activities, MEMS design project, tours, and other activities.

MEMS devices are sometimes referred to as micro-electro-mechanical systems or micromachines. MEMS devices are found in Wii video game systems (serve as motion sensors), automobile airbags, and remote control insects and have many other modern applications.

Viewed positively by college admissions directors for students considering STEM majors, especially engineering and technology, SUMMIT regularly attracts student applicants earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
