ALVAREZ WORK HAILED IN LOCAL NEWSPAPER

When a reporter from Tidewater Hispanic News came to interview Tania Alvarez, an academic advisor with ODU Engineering, she did not expect for the article that would follow to make the front-page of the publication.

In the July issue, however, a smiling Alvarez graced the front page of the journal along with all the other top stories. As a "shining light for Hispanics and Latinos," the article about Alvarez chronicles her work at ODU and how her heritage helps the advisor make a difference for students:

The emotional empathy Alvarez has for others may stem from her personal family history. The daughter of an American mother, of Irish descent, and a Mexican father, of Italian and Spanish heritage, Alvarez was born in Mexico City, Mexico, growing up in a culturally diverse household and neighborhood.

Having worked at ODU for two years now, Alvarez is a champion for all students at ODU and has served the campus community in numerous and varied ways. In addition to serving with the Hispanic & Latino Employee Association (HLEA), she is the co-advisor for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at ODU. She is also a Virginia Latino Higher Education Network board member, a member of the National Academic Advising Association, Old Dominion Advising Network, and a member of the Association of University Administrators. Through her pursuits, she seeks to tackle some of the challenges faced by the Hispanic and Latino communities. Alvarez is deeply entrenched in her work with the College and finds hope in it for the students she helps guide.
