ODU Army ROTC Alum Promoted to Brigadier General

Old Dominion University graduate Martin P. Schweitzer has been promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army. Schweitzer, who earned a bachelor's degree from ODU in 1985 and was commissioned through the Army ROTC program, currently serves as the deputy commander for operations of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Schweitzer's 26 years of distinguished service includes military operations in Panama, Rwanda, the Congo, Southern Europe and the Middle East. His most significant assignments ashore have included operations officer for the Central Command on the Joint Staff and Chief and senate liaison in the Office of Chief of Legislative Affairs.

Established at ODU in 1969, the Army ROTC "Monarch Battalion" has produced three other Army generals who are currently on active duty: Lt. Gen. Kathleen Gainey '78, Maj. Gen. John Bednarek '75 and Maj. Gen. Mark Perrin '79. Additionally, ODU graduate Benjamin Griffin, class of 1969, attained four-star rank before retiring in 2008 as commanding general of the U.S. Army Material Command, following 38 years of service.
