IMPRESSIVE CAREER PLACES HASAN PEHLIVAN '75 IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Each month, the Department of the Navy (DON) Leadership Action Team nominates top personnel to be considered for the honor of becoming the highlighted employee on the DON Office of Civilian Human Resources (OCHR) homepage. In June, Hasan Pehlivan was chosen, and his profile appeared on the DON OCHR website during the month.

A 1975 ODU Engineering graduate, Hasan Pehlivan is currently the Program Manager for the shipboard incentivized Energy Conservation (iENCON) program. The iENCON program promotes fuel conservation in naval operations and works to effect a cultural shift without impacting mission or operational readiness. As the iENCON Program Manager since 1993, Pehlivan leads an iENCON team to US Naval Bases around the world, where they meet with ship operators to discuss how best to reduce energy consumption through operational and procedural modifications.

Pehlivan received the White House Presidential Award in 2002 in recognition of his success with iENCON. Through his hard work, the program demonstrated a cost avoidance of $40 million. "This was the highest honor one can feel," Pehlivan says. In 2008, he was also awarded the Superior Civilian Service Award.

Pehlivan has very clear feelings about the work done by himself and his fellow DON employees, stating that their "job is very important to support ships' forces that are sailing rough seas, fighting enemies, protecting the high seas from pirates, protecting our shores from drug traffickers and potential terrorists, and conducting many high tempo missions to be ready for any conflict to protect this great Nation and the free world." He sets a wonderful example to others at the DON and, in maintaining a positive and diligent work ethic, believes you can achieve "a greater sense of satisfaction that you did your part to keep the US Navy the best in the world."
