AFTER 40 YEARS, BILL MCMAHON RETIRES

Forty years at one institution is certainly a feat to be lauded. On June 1, the forty years that William J. "Bill" McMahon has given in service to Old Dominion University was celebrated as his retirement from the University was officially announced at a reception in his honor.

McMahon is well-known around campus and has held positions in capacities ranging from budgeting to distance learning to academics. McMahon received a B.S. in Business Administration from ODU in 1966 and a Master of Business Administration from ODU in 1977. He joined ODU as Assistant Director of Off Campus Credit Programs in 1971. In 1974, McMahon directed a non-credit technical program annually offering 200 continuing short courses and seminars for technicians and engineers through the School of Continuing Studies and the College of Engineering and Technology. In 1984, he was assigned to the College. And, although he will finish his ODU career as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Oktay Baysal more fondly recalls McMahon's time in the College of Engineering and Technology.

While with the College, McMahon served primarily as the college's budget administrator handling its capital, accounting and space management. In addition, McMahon was appointed as the regional director of distance learning for the statewide Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program and was fundamental in the creation of the distance learning program for Engineering Technology.

"In all financial matters, I knew exactly whom to turn to," Dean Baysal said. "You could always rely on Bill [McMahon] to have the answer."

Since his time with the College, McMahon moved into Academic Services and has spent the last five years with Academic Affairs. Jim Duffy will succeed McMahon and is currently working alongside his predecessor learning the fine points of Academic Affairs.

Dean Baysal has only the sincerest of messages for McMahon in regards to his impending retirement: "I certainly join the rest of the University in extending my heartfelt congratulations to Bill. This is a hard-earned and well-deserved retirement!"
