SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award Winner and Nominees Recognized

Mark Butler, professor of biological sciences, was recognized as winner of a SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award winner at the Faculty Awards and Retirement Dinner on May 3.

In 2008, he was honored with the Hirschfeld Award for Faculty Excellence from the College of Sciences, which recognizes faculty who have achieved excellence in their balance of teaching, research and service. His research accomplishments and the respect he has garnered on the international stage are complemented by the high regard that students and faculty at Old Dominion have for his teaching acumen.

He has received awards for Most Inspirational Faculty by the College of Sciences and Outstanding Teacher in Biological Sciences, and he was a finalist for the university's Doctoral Mentoring Award. He connects with students because he treats them as research apprentices, infusing factual information with instruction on practical aspects of science, such as how to publish a paper or obtain grant funding.

Butler is an internationally known marine biologist whose groundbreaking research on lobsters has made him "one of the world's foremost authorities on lobsters," as one colleague put it.

Also recognized at the awards dinner were ODU's other nominees for the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award: Jie Chen, Annette Finley-Croswhite, Charles Keating, Ling Li, Karen Sanzo, Malcolm Scully, Lynn Tolle and Lepsha Vuskovic.
