ROTC Commissioning Ceremony Underscores ODU's Close Ties to Our Military

During the week of one of the most significant military events of our time, I attended the joint Army/Navy ROTC Commissioning Ceremony for 60 newly minted military leaders held Friday afternoon at ODU's Ted Constant Convocation Center.

As I looked at these young men and women, I was struck by their dedication to you and me, our communities, and our country. Knowing the danger, knowing the personal sacrifices, they chose a military path because of their belief in service to others.

Nearly 25 percent of Old Dominion's student population is military affiliated. Whether active duty or retired, spouse or child, ODU is a community of individuals that understand what lies ahead for these new officers. It is also a community that offers tremendous support for our troops and appreciates the unique experiences they bring to our learning environment.

The ceremony's speaker, ODU alumnus Lt. Gen. John M. Bednarek '75, stressed the importance of their leadership and citizenship skills because "Wherever you are, whatever you do, you are ambassadors for the United States."

Without a doubt, Friday's newly commissioned officers will be some of the strongest and most positive representatives our country has ever had.
