AWARDS
ANNA JENG, associate professor of environmental health sciences, a Certificate of Merit from the National Environmental Health Association for her exemplary contribution to the profession of environmental health. It is based on her service as a member of the Virginia State of Board of Health, a board member of the Virginia Environmental Health Association, and for the advancement of the environmental health profession through teaching to cultivate the next generation of environmental health professionals.
EXHIBITIONS
RICHARD NICKEL, associate professor of art, was invited to jury and present awards for the 40th anniversary student art exhibition and reception at Tidewater Community College. He also was invited to donate several artworks to the 10th Annual ForKids Art Action and Casino Night.
JOHN ROTH, associate professor of art, was invited to have his sculpture shown at The Affordable Art Fair New York City, with Mayer Fine Art Gallery of Norfolk, May 3-8.
PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS
GEORGE FOWLER, associate university librarian for information resources and technology, and lead author Phillip Jones, head of the Fine Arts Library at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, "The Limits of Democracy in Academic Libraries in a Revolutionary Age" at the Association of College & Research Libraries 2011 National Conference in Philadelphia.
IORDANKA PANAYOTOVA, assistant professor of mathematics and statistics, "How Does the Earth's Rotation Affect the Large-Scale Atmospheric Phenomena?" to the Applied Mathematical Sciences students at Sweet Briar College, and "Meridional Asymmetries in Geophysical Flows" at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Workshop "Societally Relevant Computing" at University of Minnesota.
JAMES SWEENEY, associate professor emeritus of history, "Postscript to Massive Resistance: The Decline and Fall of the Virginia Commission on Constitutional Government" at the Virginia Forum (the annual conference on Virginia history) at Washington and Lee University.
MARIANA SZKLO-COXE, assistant professor of community and environmental health, was invited to present Clinical Research Grand Rounds, on "Insomnia and Depression: Can Research Shed Light on this Complex Relationship?" at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research in Baltimore.
