Jim Duffy Named Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs

Jim Duffy, associate university budget officer, has been appointed to the position of associate vice president for academic affairs, Provost Carol Simpson announced recently.

He will succeed Bill McMahon, who is retiring next month after 40 years at Old Dominion. Simpson said that Duffy, who was selected following a regional search, will work with McMahon for a short period as he transitions into his new role.

"Jim brings to this position a wealth of experience as a public administrator together with an in-depth knowledge of the university," Simpson said. "I look forward to working with him."

Duffy has more than 37 years of experience as a public administrator specializing in finance, budget and performance data. He joined ODU in 1999 as associate university budget officer.

His primary duties in the new position will be to provide financial and management services to the Office of Academic Affairs in the areas of budgeting, resource allocation, faculty hiring, workload analysis and management studies, Simpson said. He will also assist college deans and program directors in complying with university administrative policies and procedures.

Prior to his work at the university, Duffy served as director of finance and administration for the city of Virginia Beach Community Services Board for more than 21 years. He holds a master's degree in public administration from ODU (1978) and completed doctoral course work in public administration, also at the university. He has a B.A. in urban affairs, with studies in architecture, from Virginia Tech.

Duffy is a member of the American Society for Public Administration and the National Association of University and College Business Officers, among other professional associations.

In welcoming Duffy to the new position, Simpson also paid tribute to McMahon in her letter. "Bill has been a terrific colleague and a major force within Academic Affairs. He will be sorely missed by all who have worked with him over the years. I invite you to join with me in thanking Bill for his considerable service to the university and in wishing him a long, happy and healthy retirement."
