Faculty Retirees Honored

Five retiring faculty members were recognized at the Faculty Awards and Retirement Dinner on May 3.

Jon Crunkleton has served on a variety of college and university committees in his 33 years at Old Dominion. He created the Real Estate and Advisory Board in 1990, which evolved into the Center for Real Estate and Economic Development.

Gail Flax came to ODU as an adjunct instructor. She also took on a variety of roles and responsibilities related to the Career Switcher Program. Through the demonstration and provision of instruction in research-based practices, she has prepared and advised numerous teacher preparation candidates and won awards, including the Hampton Roads Volunteer Achievement Award.

Kathy Fleming joined the university in 1998 and has served as a clinical supervisor in the nationally accredited program in speech-language pathology/communication sciences and disorders. She supervised graduate students in the on-campus Speech and Hearing Clinic, which provides crucial community service and serves within the health profession network of southeastern Virginia.

William Jones came to ODU in 1975 and was promoted to associate professor in 1979. He has taught general education and honors courses in philosophy during his career. He has 56 philosophy and science publications to his credit, and has served as chair of his department and as a member of the Faculty Senate.

Mike Overstreet came to the university in 1984 as an assistant professor of computer science and was promoted to associate professor in 1988. He is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher in simulation and areas of software engineering.

Also retiring this year are: Walter Berry, Accounting; Carol DeRolf, Child Study Center; Amin Dharamsi, Electrical and Computer Engineering; Stephen Foster, Foreign Languages and Literatures; Martha Hofler, Economics; Joseph Sever, Communication Disorders and Special Education; Alfred Townsend, Music; and Charlie Turner, Economics.
