SCHAFRAN SHARES MENTORING EXPERIENCES WITH FACULTY
Gary Schafran, professor and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, preseented "Advising Students: Faculty as Research Mentor" on March 22, for the Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning Series.
Schafran has been on the Old Dominion faculty for the past 23 years, and has been involved with environmental engineering research for 30 years, working with high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers.
Schafran spoke about the approaches he has used over the years to mentor students in their research, and discuss the strategies that he has found successful (and unsuccessful), with particular focus on students' backgrounds and learning styles.
Hosted by Provost Carol Simpson and the Center for Learning Technologies, the Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning series features many of ODU's award-winning faculty members and administrators.
Conversations on Teaching and Learning is designed to provide faculty and administrators from across the campus with the opportunity to share, think and reflect on a wide range of teaching and learning issues, according to Simpson.
