AWARDS

STEVE BELL, executive director of international programs, a grant from the Fulbright International Education Administrators Program for a professional development experience in Japan. The visit will take him to the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka from June 10 to July 2.

JENNIFER DEL CORSO, adjunct, counseling and human services, a scholarship to attend the American Counseling Association conference in New Orleans in March 2011 from the National Employment Counseling Association, for her outstanding program proposal for the convention.

ANN GRANDY, executive director, ODU Community Development Corp., the 2011 Women of Courage, Confidence, and Character Award from the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast. The honor recognizes women who set a powerful example of leadership, resourcefulness and success to inspire young girls to aim for excellence. The award reflects the Girl Scout mission statement: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

BOOKS

ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor of engineering management, and Lakhmi Jain, editors, "Intelligence-based Systems Engineering," for Series: Intelligent Systems Reference Library, Vol. 10 (Springer, Heidelberg). Tolk also co-wrote a chapter, with KEVIN ADAMS, principal research scientist, ODU's National Centers for System of Systems Engineering, and CHUCK KEATING, professor of engineering management, "Towards Intelligence-based Systems Engineering and System of Systems Engineering."

EXHIBITIONS

RICHARD NICKEL, associate professor of art and program director of ceramics and art education, juried into "Beyond the Brickyard" at the Archie Bray Art Center in Helena, Mont. His work is titled "Songs For Children, 2009." The third annual juried exhibition ran Jan. 29 to April 2.

PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS

JOHN ADAM, University Professor of mathematics, "Mathematical Patterns in Nature" to students and faculty at St. Patrick's Catholic School, Norfolk, and "Patterns in Nature" to faculty, staff and students at the Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk.

JIM BLANDO, assistant professor of community and environmental health, an invited presentation by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine to update the Emergency Preparedness Panel on medical countermeasures at the request of the assistant secretary of health and human services. He gave his presentation Feb. 28 in Washington, D.C.

SAIKOU DIALLO, senior project scientist, Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, "Understanding Interoperability" at the Spring Simulation Multiconference, Emerging M&S Applications in Industry and Academia, SCS, in Boston. Co-authors are HEBER HERENCIA-ZAPANA, ODU graduate; JOSE PADILLA, postdoctoral research associate, VMASC; and ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor of engineering management.

ROD EVANS, lecturer of philosophy, "Sorry, Wrong Answer" to the Central Business District Association of Virginia Beach.

TIM GROTHAUS, assistant professor of counseling and human services, and five counseling doctoral students - CARON COLES, TRACY JACKSON, BRANDY RICHESON, HELEN RUNYAN and AMY UPTON - presented programs at the refereed conference of the Virginia School Counselor Association in Richmond.

KATHLEEN LEVINGSTON, lecturer of counseling and human services, a workshop on play therapy at the ODU-sponsored Play Therapy Institute in Tuscany, Italy.

ARIEL PINTO, assistant professor of engineering management, ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor of engineering management, and MICHAEL MCSHANE, assistant professor of finance, "Emerging M&S Application in Risk Management" at the Spring Simulation Multiconference, Emerging M&S Applications in Industry and Academia, SCS, in Boston.

ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor of engineering management, "How Is M&S Interoperability Different from Other Interoperability Domains?" at the Spring Simulation Interoperability Workshop in Boston. Also at the workshop, with EMILY ANDREWS, ODU graduate, "Software Reuse for Modeling and Simulation."

NANCY XU, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, "Design and Probing of Efflux Functions of EGFP Fused ABC Membrane Transporters in Live Cells Using Fluorescence Spectroscopy" in a recent issue of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry. Co-authors are FENG DING and KERRY LEE, doctoral students; TAO HUANG, postdoctoral researcher; and ARDESCHIR VAHEDI-FARIDI, research scientist.

PERFORMANCES

MARILYN MARLOFF, associate professor of dance, choreographer of "Lumen Sensibus," which was selected for inclusion in the adjudicated Starr Foster 9th Annual Richmond Choreographers Showcase, and performed by MEGAN THOMPSON, lecturer, and AMANDA KINZER, associate professor, of the dance program.

MEGAN THOMPSON, lecturer, and AMANDA KINZER, associate professor, dance program, choreographers and performers of "Gyro," selected for inclusion in the adjudicated Starr Foster 9th Annual Richmond Choreographers Showcase, with live musical accompaniment by ODU student percussionists DALE LAZAR and NIKOLAS WHITE.
